Robin Roberts is taking some time off from Good Morning America for an exciting reason.
Roberts noticeably skipped the ABC morning show’s Friday, May 29, episode and remained absent as the series kicked off its new week on Monday, June 1. Roberts offered an explanation for her absence via Instagram on Sunday, May 31, revealing that she is actually out of the country.
“Made it to South Africa for the filming of my upcoming @lifetimetv movie starring @sherrieshepherd & @alldondre,” Roberts shared. “The Mrs joined me on the looong flight so need a moment to sit back and count our blessings!” Roberts’ post featured a photo of her and her wife Amber Laign‘s legs underneath a table.
Fans shared their excitement for the movie and envy of her trip in the post’s comments. “Just got back a few days ago from running the Cape Town Marathon. The people, the history, the energy! Cape Town put on a 10/10 show for us! Enjoy!” one person wrote. Another added, “Good luck with the shoot drink some good white wine while in SA!”
Someone else shared, “Welcome to South Africa @robinrobertsgma best wishes for your upcoming movie.” A different person posted, “Enjoy your time together and much success with filming your movie.” A separate commenter stated, “Have a great time! You’re the best Robin!”
Back in March, Lifetime announced that Roberts would executive produce the new movie Angel in the Rubble through her production company, Rock’n Robin Productions. The film will be based on Genelle Guzman-McMillan’s memoir Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11’s Last Survivor.
Following the recent conclusion of her daytime talk show, Sherri Shepherd will star in the movie as Guzman-McMillan, a New York City transit worker who was trapped beneath the rubble of Tower One for 27 hours following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“As she fought to stay alive, Genelle reflected on her life and the faith she had left behind, praying for deliverance and promising to change if given another chance. Her prayers were answered when a man named Paul found her in the debris and remained by her side until rescuers pulled her to safety — the final survivor recovered from Ground Zero,” the film’s description states. “When Genelle later searched for Paul to thank him, no one could confirm he was ever there, leading her to believe he was an angel sent to save her and guide her toward the renewed life she had promised while buried beneath the rubble.”
Per Roberts’ Instagram post, the film will also star Dondré T. Whitfield. The movie will debut on Lifetime in September to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Angel in the Rubble will mark Roberts’ fourth movie collaboration with Lifetime. Under her “Robin Roberts Presents” banner, the GMA host previously produced I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story, Stolen By My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story, and Mahalia.
