As a musical unit, Gran Fenwick are if anything, fearless. While other artists may conform to certain expectations they assume music fans have of them, Gran Fenwick has little time for such considerations. After experimenting heavily with covering other people’s songs, including our premiere of the “Armour Hill” music video, the band has found their way back to their own music. Today marks the premiere of the music video for their latest single “Rarin 2 Go.”
This time, the band has brought along some support in guest vocals from Alexandra Hopkins and Erika Christou of Canadian punk band Jerkoff Diary. A nice, aggressive punk rocker, “Rarin 2 Go” isn’t meant to appeal to any one musical generation. It sounds modern enough, but vintage enough for dads who will tell you about the glory of their Warped Tour visits in the late 1990s. The accompanying music video is both lively and humorous. It features the band’s lead singer, Ian Strung, on his way through an aggravating trip through the streets of Toronto on his way to the place he feels most comfortable, the jam space.
It feels good for Gran Fenwick to be back writing and releasing their own original creations. But when they go to record an album of Canadian classics or remake songs by more local artists, it’s not for a lack of ideas or courage to write their own songs. The band is intent on finding new and different artistic challenges. And artistic challenges don’t always have to be conventional. Variety in music is good, and it’s an underrated element of popular music. Artists often are apprehensive about turning off their own fanbase, so they deliver something expected. Gran Fenwick just doesn’t like to operate that way. Strung is always seeking out new artistic challenges. Strung identifies as a lifer when it comes to writing and recording. He has become a mainstay of Toronto’s punk underground and is well respected for his ability to take musical risks.
If you’re looking for Gran Fenwick, just check the opposite direction of where everyone else is headed. This is a band that likes to route its own course.
