EXCLUSIVE: Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American distribution rights to Fernando Eimbcke’s Olmo.
Greenwich will release the film in theaters across the U.S. on August 7.
Eimbcke co-wrote the film with Vanessa Garnica. The project was produced by Plan B and Teorema. It premiered in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival in 2025 before screening at Toronto, Deauville, San Sebastián, and the London Film Festival.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Olmo just wants to be a normal teenager and hang out with his best friend, but he must help care for his sick father. When Olmo gets invited to a party by his beautiful neighbor, he will do whatever he can to meet up with her while embarking on an adventure of mischief, laughs, and chaos. As the night unfolds, he may come to love the very place he’s spent so long trying to escape: his home.”
Olmo was produced for Plan B by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (Moonlight) and for Teorema by Michel Franco and Eréndira Núñez Larios (Dreams). The acquisition was negotiated by Greenwich’s Andy Bohn with CAA Media Finance representing the filmmakers.
“I’ve always been drawn to stories about growing up – the joy, the playfulness, the pain, the confusion – it is not a coincidence that almost all my movies involve characters who are kids,” Eimbcke said in the statement.
“On Olmo, I was lucky enough to write the script with Vanesa Garnica, one of my best friends since we were 14 years old growing up in Mexico. We shared a love of music and John Hughes movies, and because of this, we had such a lovely shorthand. Our criteria to decide if something worked was simple: if it made us laugh, it stayed. Even more so if it made us cry. With Olmo, we wanted to portray the full spectrum of adolescence, including all the beauty and heartbreak that can come with it, as well as highlight the extraordinary circumstances that ordinary families face every day. We’re excited to be working with Greenwich to share the film with U.S. audiences this summer.”
Global Constellation is representing international sales on the film. Olmo will receive a release in Japan later this year via STARCAT Entertainment and through HBO in Eastern Europe, and Latin America through Amazon Prime.
