A brand-new social media trend seems to have taken hold on TikTok called the “group 7” trend. People on the video-sharing platform are asking whether they’re part of “group 7” yet. Let’s take a closer look at how this trend exactly started and what it takes to become part of this mysterious “group 7.”

Here’s the meaning of the viral ‘Group 7 people’ trend

It all started when singer Sophia James recently posted a series of TikTok videos of herself. She shared a brief incident in which she received a parking ticket while singing and dancing to her new song “So Unfair.” This turned into a marketing strategy for the 26-year-old as she began posting a series of videos with the music, aiming for higher reach.

While self-promoting her song on the video-sharing platform, James started labeling groups of people who came across her song as “group 5” for the fifth video, for example. “If you’re seeing this, you’re a part of group 5,” the text on the video read. “I’m posting a bunch of videos to observe which one gets the most reach. This is post number 5.”

Eventually, she posted video number 6 and then video number 7, which led to shocking results. At the time of writing, post number 6 has around 6.2 million views, and post number 7, which reads, “You are in group 7,” has a whopping 74.9 million views.

Along with fans, brands like Aveeno and Fenty Beauty also jumped onto the trend by commenting on the post. The Aveeno TikTok account commented, “I heard group 7 has really great skin…,” while the Fenty Beauty account wrote, “group 7 (is) the baddest we don’t make the rules.”

Sophia James followed this post with another video in which she told fans that the song wasn’t viral, and that they’re just in group 7. Further, testing her luck, James posted another video. This time it read, “Step 2 of the experiment: Trying to see if using another song will still reach group 7.”
