Gwyneth Paltrow says the commotion around her “conscious uncoupling” with Coldplay singer and ex-husband Chris Martin led to an unexpected snag in her acting career.
“I think the distributor was like, ‘This might be too hot to touch.’”
Paltrow went on, saying, “So that was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired off — so it was so awesome.”
The Goop mogul was widely mocked for a 2014 blog post about her split with Martin, with many finding her euphemism for the break-up painfully precious or just downright pretentious.
Looking back, Paltrow said she can see why she rubbed people the wrong way with her wording, which was meant to frame the separation as a healthy, amicable end instead of emotional warfare.
“Say you had had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had had a really nasty divorce,” she told Poehler. “And then you hear this idea that like, it doesn’t have to be done this way. I think the implicit learning is like, ‘Oh, fuck. Like, they’re saying I did something wrong.’”
Paltrow and Martin’s conscious uncoupling process reached its end in 2016, when their divorce was legally finalized. She has been married to television producer Brad Falchuk since 2018.
