Actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s dating history has long been star studded. The Academy Award winner, who turns 53 today, Sept. 27, has dated some of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, from her early romance with Donovan Leitch Jr. to her marriage with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
Over the years, she has spoken candidly about her relationships, often reflecting on them with honesty and humor. In December 2022, Paltrow spoke during an Instagram Story Q&A about how she feels about her exes, saying she remains on good terms.
“Pretty much. I really believe in conscious uncoupling,” she wrote. “When you spend meaningful time with someone, it’s nice to have it morph into friendship. I don’t want to have bad blood with anyone, ever (if I can help it).”
Her best-known “conscious uncoupling” came in 2014 when she and Martin ended their 10-year marriage but continued to co-parent their two children, Apple and Moses. “I think Chris and I were meant to be together and have our kids,” she said in 2019. “But our relationship is much better like this: friends and co-parents and family.”
Before Martin, Paltrow had a series of high-profile romances. She first dated actor Donovan Leitch Jr. in the early 1990s. The pair remained friendly, with Leitch Jr. later clarifying their much-discussed 2013 baseball game kiss, saying, “I was just saying goodbye to her. It was purely innocent.”
She was also linked to Dead Poets Society actor Robert Sean Leonard, who later recalled their split as “the funniest breakup I’ve ever had.” Leonard said in 1998, “We were in her apartment, figured we shouldn’t see each other anymore, and within five minutes she was saying, ‘You know who you’d like? I have this friend.’…Gwyneth’s a bit of a yenta, but she’s a great, great friend.”
One of Paltrow’s most famous romances was with Brad Pitt. The pair dated from 1994 to 1997 and were briefly engaged. Pitt said he fell for her instantly while filming Seven, “I knew immediately. I got within 10 feet of her, and I got goofy. I couldn’t talk.”
Paltrow admitted she was initially “oblivious” to his feelings, later reflecting that she was too young to marry. The exes reunited for a 2022 interview, with Pitt calling it “lovely” to have her as a friend again, to which she replied, “It is.”

After Pitt, she dated Ben Affleck on-and-off from 1997 to 2000, starring together in Shakespeare in Love and Bounce. In 2015, Paltrow told Howard Stern, “He’s super intelligent and really, really talented and he’s funny. But he wasn’t in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.”
She later described Pitt as “the sort of major chemistry, love of your life” while joking that Affleck was “technically excellent.”
She was later linked to Luke Wilson before meeting Chris Martin, whom she married in 2003. After their split, Paltrow found lasting love with television writer Brad Falchuk.
The two married in 2018, and Paltrow continues to praise him publicly. “I adore my husband. He’s brilliant and deeply kind. I feel like he’s a real equal too,” she told InStyle in 2019. Two years later, she called him “such a special, amazing man.”
