David Dhawan, who is currently promoting Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, recently opened up about why he never collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan despite working with several top stars over the years.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, the filmmaker dismissed any notion of a deliberate gap, explaining that it was more about timing than choice. He said, “Aisi baat nahi hain (It isn’t like that). I think at one time we were planning to do something together. But I was always busy. Always mere paas do pictures floor mein rahti thi (I always had two films going on floors at that time). So, it was very difficult to you know. But definitely at one stage it was there.”
Dhawan further clarified that he never limited himself to working with specific actors, and collaborations often happened organically. “Par mere kabhi bhi aisa nahi hain ke main yeh actor ke saath work karunga. Maine jaise Govinda ke saath kiya, Salman ke saath kiya, Sanjay…wohi ho gaya tha hisab kitab (But it’s never been the case that I would only work with a specific actor. As I worked with Govinda, Salman, and Sanjay (Dutt), it just worked out that way).”
Over the years, Dhawan has delivered multiple hits with stars like Govinda, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan, but his collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan ultimately never materialised due to scheduling constraints rather than any creative differences.
About David Dhawan’s Upcoming Movie
David Dhawan is set to return to the director’s chair after a six-year gap with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The film marks his fourth collaboration with his son, Varun Dhawan, continuing a successful creative partnership. Alongside Varun, the romantic comedy features Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in lead roles, with a supporting cast that includes Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Rajesh Kumar, Maniesh Paul, and others.
The film recently drew criticism after its first-look video went viral, particularly for its use of AI-generated elements. The inclusion of talking AI babies’ sparked backlash online, with many viewers expressing concern about such technology being used in the film. Addressing the controversy, Dhawan later clarified that the AI visuals were created solely for the promotional material and are not part of the actual film.
Originally scheduled for a June 4 theatrical release, the makers have now advanced the date to May 22 to avoid a box office clash with Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups.
