King Charles is ready to embrace his son Prince Harry and daughter-in-law Meghan Markle when they jet back to Britain – but three other royals may not be so thrilled. It’s understood the Sussexes, possibly including Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will fly into the UK next month for the launch of the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games 2027 in Birmingham.
King Charles will naturally be eager to see his grandchildren, whom he has not seen in four years, and dearly misses. But after so much rancour and rage from Harry on TV or in his book Spare, Charles’s welcoming embrace to him and Meghan could go down as one of the most magnanimous by a monarch in British history.
In previous centuries the Sussexes might have been sent straight to the Tower.
The King “bending over backwards” to facilitate Harry’s trip to the UK is thought to have caused friction between Charles and his eldest son.
But if King Charles is willing to let bygones be bygones as he appears to – amid claims he’s offered them rooms in a palace during their stay – you could imagine three other royals will be far less accommodating.
In Spare, Harry branded Queen Camilla a “villain”, “dangerous” and a “wicked stepmother” who briefed the press against him to further her own image.
He wrote: “I had complex feelings about gaining a step parent who, I believed, had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar. In a funny way I even wanted Camilla to be happy. Maybe she’d be less dangerous if she was happy?”
Did Harry think his father and stepmother would not read the book?!?
He sacrificed Camilla for the sake of selling a more explosive book (which earned him over £20m by the way).
In the same book, he seriously stuck a literary knife into the back of his own brother Prince William, and sister-in-law Catherine.
First, he twisted his decision to dress up in a Nazi fancy dress outfit into another example of his victimhood, as he instead blamed it on William and Catherine.
Talking about donning the deeply offence outfit on Halloween in 2005, Harry claimed he asked his brother and sister-in-law to choose what he should wear and they both chirped: “Nazi uniform!”
He then revealed there was a rift between Meghan and Catherine; claimed William “pointed a finger at Meg” that prompted her to respond: “Keep your finger out of my face!” and he snitched on William again by saying he once knocked him to the floor.
King Charles also did not escape being slammed in Spare with Harry slating him as being “not cut out for single parenting” – not that King Charles had any choice in the matter after the premature, tragic death of Diana Princess of Wales.
So Harry and Meghan are coming. Camilla, William and Catherine will show dignity and grace if a meeting is arranged I’m sure – as they always do – but deep down they must be raging.
They may not be at the airport to glumly greet them, but I bet they’ll be there days later to happily see them off.
