The King might be dusting off the fine china for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to the UK, but the Prince of Wales’ door is firmly bolted shut, royal insiders reveal.
Last week, news broke that Charles, 77, is “happy” about Prince Harry and Meghan’s impending visit to Britain, seeing it as a chance to reconnect with his two grandchildren, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, whom he hasn’t seen in four years.
In a surprising U-turn, the monarch is even reportedly footing the bill for the family’s trip, including security, as well as offering them a royal residence to stay in while Harry celebrates One Year To Go Invictus events in Birmingham next month.
But these details – and reports Meghan, 44, and Harry, 41, plan to bring a documentary crew with them – are said to have left his estranged brother William, 44, “infuriated”.
“William is so appalled by what he sees as his father’s betrayal that he refused to join a customary family lunch after Trooping the Colour, leaving the celebrations with his wife Catherine and his three children immediately after the Royal Air Force flypast,” claims royal correspondent Tom Sykes, adding that the hot-headed heir has allegedly threatened to “boycott Sandringham” after “learning of Meghan’s triumphant imminent return to the UK on the arm of Prince Harry”.
A royal return
Adding to William’s woes, Charles is thought to have offered up family accommodation at either Buckingham Palace or – in what William deems as an even bigger slight – Princess Diana’s childhood home Althorp House.
The estate is an hour from Birmingham, where Invictus is held, and is mysteriously closed for visitors on 10 and 11 July.
“William was already worried sick about Charles being played, but hearing Harry and Meghan might be bringing a film crew along has made his blood boil,” a royal insider tells us.
“It’s incredibly frustrating to watch helplessly as his father lines himself up for more disappointment, hurt and possibly even betrayal. “What’s worse is Charles offered them Princess Diana’s old residence and it’s completely irked William. Privately, he and Kate have talked about Meghan’s apparent obsession with his late mum – from her wardrobe to reportedly taking selfies in the Paris tunnel. “The thought of her staying in his mum’s old house with a film crew, knowing they could be making a documentary for Netflix, is keeping him awake at night.”
Kate steps in
It looks like Harry’s visit could be the first of many, with palace sources revealing that while the couple aren’t currently house-hunting in the UK, the prince sees this trip as a test for a more permanent return to his homeland.
Meanwhile, as Wills continues to spiral, the Princess of Wales, 44, is doing her best to calm him.
“Kate is urging William to avoid the Sussex show as much as he can, but he’ll be biting his tongue if Meghan starts lording it over everyone while she’s here,” our insider tells.
“William is far from alone in wanting to keep Meghan away from the royal homes and families, but not so Archie and Lilibet. Probably the most aggravating part for William, who reacts badly to manipulation, is he’s as keen to see his niece and nephew as their grandfather is – and Meghan jolly well knows it.”
