Hayden Panettiere Cancels Appearance Last-Minute Due to Family ‘Emergency’

Hayden Panettiere has pulled out of a scheduled public appearance at the last minute due to an unknown “emergency.”

The 36-year-old actress was set to appear at the horror event Creep I.E. Aftermath in Ontario, Calif., on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, but was unable to attend as planned due to what event organizers simply described as an “emergency.”

The official Creep I.E. Con Instagram account shared the update to the event’s roster on Friday, July 10.

“Hayden Panettiere has an emergency and will not be able to attend this weekend. We are looking forward to her appearing at an upcoming show,” the statement read. 

The convention’s post also noted that a new guest would appear in Panettiere’s place following the last-minute cancellation. The guest was later identified as actress Dominique Swain, known for her roles in 1997’s Lolita and Face/Off.

The Scream 4 actress has not publicly addressed her absence from the event. A rep for Panettiere did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, July 11.

Panettiere — known in the horror world for her work in the Scream franchise as well as the 2015 video game Until Dawn — was scheduled to appear at the event alongside stars including Christopher Lloyd, Mira Sorvino, Tara Reid, Billy Zane and Jamie Campbell.

The event previously teased Panettiere’s weekend slot on social media as a “rare” Scream 4 reunion, as she was set to appear at the event alongside costar Nico Tortorella.

The actress was not the only star to pull out of Creep I.E. Aftermath, with the event’s website noting that Tori Spelling also canceled her appearance. Several other stars — including Christina Ricci, John Carroll Lynch and Carel Struycken — rescheduled their appearances for a later date.

Panettiere has been making headlines recently during the press tour for her new memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

Throughout the book, which was released in May, the actress recounts a series of shocking and emotional experiences, from alleged encounters with powerful Hollywood figures to the painful decision to allow her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, to primarily live with exWladimir Klitschko.

In This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere also reflects on navigating fame at a young age, her romantic relationships and the loss of her younger brother, Jansen, who died unexpectedly in February 2023 at age 28.

The Nashville alum has also been active on social media while promoting the memoir. Her most recent post before the last-minute cancellation was a Fourth of July tribute.
