Paul Bettany says he can’t rewatch A Knight’s Tale following the tragic death of Heath Ledger.
In 2001, Bettany and Ledger appeared together in A Knight’s Tale, a medieval action comedy about a peasant squire who attempts to become a hero by winning a jousting tournament. Ledger plays the squire, William Thatcher, and Bettany portrays a young Geoffrey Chaucer, who will go on to become the famous English poet.
During a recent appearance at L.A. Comic Con, Bettany was asked about A Knight’s Tale and if fans approach him to recite some of Chaucer’s most famous lines. Unfortunately, Bettany has no recollection of those quotes because of a heartbreaking reason.

“It was a really long time ago,” Bettany said to the crowd via EW. “It was like another lifetime ago. And people do come up sometimes, people come up to me on the street and quote things at me, and I literally can’t remember. I can’t remember any of it.
Bettany added, “I saw [the film] when it first came out. I’ve never seen it again since. There are lots of reasons for that, and just one of them is that I miss Heath too much.”
Ledger died in 2008 at the age of 28.
In A Knight’s Tale, William Squire wants to compete in jousting tournaments in 14th-century Europe. Only nobles can compete in tournaments, so he needs to fake his identity. Chaucer agrees to forge a nobility patent so William can compete under the alias Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein from Gelderland.
Besides Ledger and Bettany, A Knight’s Tale starred Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, and Alan Tudyk.
Brian Helgeland wrote and directed A Knight’s Tale, which is based on Chaucer’s story from The Canterbury Tales. Despite mixed reviews, A Knight’s Tale went on to become a financial hit, grossing $117 million on a $65 million budget.
