Chances are you may have forgotten about the Hello Kitty live-action/animation hybrid film announced in 2019, but after years of silence, we finally have a release date for this ambitious project. Confirming the release date on July 21, 2028, Warner Bros took the news to its official X handle with a short teaser.
Since the project is still in its nascent stage, many details – including the plot – remain under wraps. Notably, Sanrio has also licensed rights for other characters from Kitty’s universe, including Gudetama, My Melody, and Little Twin Stars, and more, giving fans plenty to look forward to.
Speaking of the creative team, the film is produced by Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo., who is also working on the Moana live-action film. Leo Matsuda, known for his work on projects like Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph, is assuming the director’s chair, with Dana Fox working on the scripts.
For those unfamiliar, Hello Kitty is a popular cat mascot created by Yuko Shimizu in 1974. The feline quickly morphed into a merchandising juggernaut with thousands of stores devoted to the character and her friends. The phenomenon didn’t stop there – Kitty also made her on-screen debut, appearing in several animated projects, video games, and even comics.
Sanrio has held the rights to the character for around 50 years and is now entrusting them to major studios Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. It will be interesting to see what kind of Hollywood makeover Kitty White receives now.
