“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” returns tonight, Sept. 23, less than a week after it was suspended “indefinitely” by Disney, which owns ABC, over comments Jimmy Kimmel made about Charlie Kirk’s death.
Disney told USA TODAY on Sept. 22 that it had suspended Kimmel “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.”
“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive,” the company said. “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on (Sept. 23).”
Kimmel hasn’t publicly commented on his suspension, but other late-night talk show hosts have shown their support for him. Stephen Colbert, whose CBS late-night show was recently canceled, called Kimmel’s suspension “blatant censorship,” and Jon Stewart said ABC’s decision was an “unprecedented consolidation of power and unitarian intimidation.”

President Donald Trump, often the subject of Kimmel’s jokes, described Kimmel’s suspension as “Great News for America,” writing in a post on Truth Social after it was announced, “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” won’t be back on the air everywhere, even though Kimmel’s suspension is coming to an end. The New York Times reported that Nexstar and Sinclair, which own ABC stations across the country, have said they will continue to preempt the show.
