Nawazuddin Siddiqui, known for his gritty performances and unconventional film choices, recently shared an emotional anecdote about his early struggles and how his father once asked him not to come home, all because he was tired of watching his son get beaten up in every movie.
Speaking with entrepreneur Raj Shamani on his podcast, the acclaimed actor opened up about the difficult phase in his career when he was often cast in small, powerless roles.
“In the beginning, I was always getting beaten up in films,” Nawazuddin recalled. “In Sarfarosh, my first movie, I was beaten. In Munna Bhai MBBS, the same thing happened. I was a thief, a pickpocket, always on the receiving end. People from my village would tell my father, ‘Your son is always getting beaten in movies.’ He was very tense about it.”
Coming from Western Uttar Pradesh, a region known for its deep-rooted sense of pride and self-respect, his father couldn’t accept seeing his son humiliated on screen repeatedly. “He once told me, ‘Why do you keep doing such roles?’ I told him, ‘I don’t get anything else; I’m trying.’ Then he said, ‘Stop coming here after getting beaten up.’” The remark hit Nawazuddin hard, so much so that he didn’t return to his village for nearly three years.
However, fate had other plans. Nawazuddin’s career took a historic turn with Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Anurag Kashyap’s crime epic that changed the course of his professional life. The film not only made him a household name but also finally earned him his father’s long-awaited approval. “After Gangs of Wasseypur released, I went back to my village and asked my father, ‘So, what do you think now?’ He smiled and said, ‘Yes, this time you did a good job,’” Nawazuddin recalled with a laugh.
The actor’s journey from small, unnoticed roles to becoming one of India’s most respected performers stands as a testament to his resilience and belief in his craft. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was last seen in Thamma, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, continuing to prove that perseverance eventually silences all doubt, even a father’s toughest criticism.
