Tuesday’s episode of High Potential was a “nice surprise” for actress Judy Reyes, even if things didn’t quote go her character’s way.
The hour began with Soto nervously awaiting word on her potential promotion to captain, a position she has more than earned. Unfortunately, she learned that her superiors passed her over for another white man. And while she successfully masked her frustration during office hours, Morgan caught her mentor in a particularly vulnerable moment at the end of the night, using a friendly drink to pry out Soto’s true feelings.

“It’s really hard, isn’t it?” Reyes tells TVLine. “And then she has to put up with all that comes with this new person, this individual who is so attracted to what she’s built that he just wants to inject himself into it. That creates a lot of issues for her and it affects how she relates to her team.”
Reyes doesn’t think Soto necessarily needs the promotion to feel vindicated — it would take her away from her friends in the bullpen, after all — but there is one answer she thinks her character deserves: “I’m hopeful that she gets to know why she was passed up. Sometimes, even though you know the reason, it doesn’t really land well until you figure it out for yourself. Sometimes you feel like you’re going crazy.”
Tuesday’s episode also found Soto defending Morgan to her superiors, and Reyes says that scrutiny will only intensify as the new captain (played by Reba‘s Steve Howey) settles into his position — and make no mistake, Soto will “always” have Morgan’s back.
“Soto brought her in, and she knows that she’s taking a big risk by bringing this odd character into the situation,” Reyes says. “Soto sees something in Morgan that someone saw in her, and that’s really important.”
Soto’s relationship with the new captain will likely be contentious, but how will he get along with everyone else? “He and Karadec develop a powerful working relationship,” Reyes reveals, “and of course he and Morgan are going to clash.” No surprise there. “She’s going to be a huge challenge to him in terms of why she’s there and how she’s there.”
Soto and Morgan’s bond will also be put to the test in the coming weeks as the mystery of Roman’s disappearance continues to unravel… quickly, apparently. “I can’t wait for you to see the next few episodes,” Reyes says of the hunt for Morgan’s estranged ex. “Your mouth is going to hang open.”
