Does ‘Masters of the Universe’ have mid-credits scenes or post-credits scenes? Here’s the spoiler-free answer.

Highlight Event and Entertainment AG (VTX:HLEE) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 18% in the last quarter. But that doesn’t change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been stomach churning. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 72% in that time. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we’re certainly hesitant to rejoice. The real question is whether the business can leave its past behind and improve itself over the years ahead.

It’s worthwhile assessing if the company’s economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let’s do just that.

We’ve found 21 US stocks that are forecast to pay a dividend yield of over 6% next year. See the full list for free.

Because Highlight Event and Entertainment made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn’t make profits, we’d generally hope to see good revenue growth. That’s because it’s hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over half a decade Highlight Event and Entertainment reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 2.0% for each year. That’s not what investors generally want to see. If a business loses money, you want it to grow, so no surprises that the share price has dropped 11% each year in that time. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn’t grow revenue. That is not really what the successful investors we know aim for.

You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

This free interactive report on Highlight Event and Entertainment’s balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

It’s good to see that Highlight Event and Entertainment has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 11% in the last twelve months. There’s no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 11% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Highlight Event and Entertainment is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about…
