As fans across the country mourn the loss of legendary actress Catherine O’Hara, her legacy will live on, particularly during the holiday season.
O’Hara, known for her role in the holiday classic “Home Alone,” among several other films and television shows, has died at the age of 71, her rep confirmed. O’Hara passed away Friday, but no cause of death has been given.
Widely beloved as Kevin McAllister’s mom in the Chicago-area-set film “Home Alone” – along with her performances in “Beetlejuice,” “Schitt’s Creek,” and more – O’Hara solidified herself as a staple in many homes for the holidays.
O’Hara most recently talked about her experience working with Macaulay Culkin in “Home Alone” as the two reunited to celebrate Culkin’s Hollywood star on the Walk of Fame in 2023.
“‘Home Alone’ was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation,” she said during a speech at the event, crediting Culkin for the film’s success.
But for Culkin, she was more than just his movie mom.
“Mama. I thought we had time,” he wrote on Instagram shortly after news of her passing broke. “I wanted more.
I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
Chicago’s O’Hare Airport also posted a tribute to O’Hara and an iconic scene from the film.
“Forever our legendary Mrs.McCallister,” the airport wrote.
O’Hara has long expressed her love for the film that brought her to the Chicago area and left her being a part of so many family’s holiday traditions.
“You never know how something’s going to turn out and you hope for the best, but all you can go on is the script and the people that you get to work with. And in that case, it definitely worked out,” she told E! News during an interview in 2021.
Even then, she knew her legacy and her role in holiday magic would live on.
“To think that I’m in one of those movies that has become a tradition for other people and their families?” she said. “That’s great.”
