Horror movie season has arrived, and it’s reflected in the movie listings this week.
But there are plenty of other movies and events for those who can’t stomach Silence of the Lambs or Texas Chain Saw Massacre. There’s live music and movies from the Minnesota Orchestra, the theatrical return of Avatar: The Way of Water, and lots and lots of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
Here are the movies you can catch around the Twin Cities this week.
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Wednesday, Oct. 1-Thursday, Oct. 2, at Emagine Eagan
Just over a week before Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is scheduled to open the Cine Latino film festival, Emagine Eagan is sharing his best film. (Apologies to Hellboy, The Devil’s Backbone, and Nightmare Alley.)
Set in Spain during the final year of World War II, a fairy tale-loving girl is sent to live with an exacting stepfather in the Spanish military. She enters a magical labyrinth where a faun informs her that she’s a princess and can prove it by taking care of a few tasks. Strange magical creatures never lie, so it doesn’t get complicated.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Thursday, Oct. 2, at Emagine Willow Creek
Week two in Cinema of the Macabre’s Edgar Wright retrospective moves from last week’s zombie comedy to the plague of crusty jugglers. The buddy cop parody stars Simon Pegg as a big-city cop sent to the safest city in England because he’s making his London coworkers look bad by being too good at his job.
He’s partnered with the son of Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent), the bumbling, cop-movie-loving Danny (Nick Frost). Even put up against the excellent Shaun of the Dead, this might be the pinnacle of the Cornetto Trilogy, a run of collaborations between the director, Pegg, and Frost that concluded with The World’s End in 2013.
Perfect Blue (1997)
Thursday, Oct. 2-Thursday, Oct. 9, at various theaters (see listings below)
Perfect Blue is often frequently considered to be among the best Japanese horror films, which feels like high praise for an anime. In it, Mima quits her successful J-Pop group to start a new career as an actress. It doesn’t sit well with some of her male fans. She receives threats and shockingly intimate personal information begins surfacing online.
Then, things get kind of weird. It’s a particularly exciting return to theaters because this first movie from Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika) isn’t streaming online.
American Psycho (2000)
Thursday, Oct. 2, at Grandview Theatres, and Sunday, Oct. 5, at Roxy’s Cabaret
A depressingly relevant slasher that lampoons ’80s excess and capitalism, American Psycho stars Christian Bale as investment banker Patrick Bateman. He’s eerily obsessed with status at his job; so much so that the movie might be creepy enough if it kept its focus there.
But Bateman is hiding his evening hobby of being a murderous psycho and Huey Lewis and the News aficionado.
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back in concert
Friday, Oct.3-Sunday, Oct. 5, at Orchestra Hall
The Empire Strikes Back needs no introduction, right? Star Wars. Darth Vader. Yoda. Fathers and sons. Etcetera.
However, this isn’t just a chance to watch one of the film franchise’s high points. The Minnesota Orchestra and conductor Sarah Hicks will perform the iconic John Williams score live as the movie plays.
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Friday, Oct. 3-Sunday, Oct. 5, at The Trylon Cinema
From the assertion that this is a true story through its glorious final shot of “Leatherface” dancing with a chainsaw on a dirt road (the character isn’t really called Leatherface until the much goofier The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2), this isn’t just a horror film; it’s a masterpiece of independent filmmaking. It always merits another visit.
Taste the Movies: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Friday, Oct. 3, at the Granada Theater (two showings)
Taste the Movies is an undersung treasure for Twin Cities (and Chicago) film experiences. At each event, a multi-course menu of dinner, treats, and drinks (non-alcoholic options are available) is served during the movie with impressive precision, timed to different moments in the movie with dishes themed around what’s happening on-screen.
For spooky season, Taste the Movies is serving food alongside The Nightmare Before Christmas. According to the presenter’s website, the early screening is sold out, but there are seats remaining for the 8:30 p.m. showing.
Taste the Movies will present Ratatouille later in the month.
