HOUSTON, Texas— Houston Grand Opera has named American conductor James Gaffigan as its next music director, the company announced Thursday. He will become music director designate in the 2026–27 season and step into the role in 2027–28, succeeding longtime artistic and music director Patrick Summers.

Gaffigan, who currently serves as general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin, will be the fifth music director in the company’s 70-year history. His initial contract runs through the 2031–32 season. The decision follows an international search launched after Summers announced plans to conclude his tenure at the end of the 2025–26 season. Summers will become music director emeritus.

Originally from New York, Gaffigan has existing ties to Houston. He holds a master’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and made his Houston Grand Opera debut in 2011 with The Marriage of Figaro. He returned this year to lead the company orchestra in the annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers and is currently conducting performances of Porgy and Bess.

“James Gaffigan’s return to Houston represents the fulfillment of an ambitious dream,” Houston Grand Opera General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor said in a statement, citing his recent performances with the company and his international profile.

Gaffigan said the position marks his first titled leadership post with an American institution. “As I considered which institution, which city, and which community aligned with my dreams and goals for an American institution, I found HGO to be my ideal partner,” he said.

Gaffigan has led productions at major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, and Bayerische Staatsoper. His orchestral engagements include appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Vienna Staatsoper, among others. He has also prioritized work with young musicians, serving as music director of the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.

In Europe, Gaffigan recently completed four seasons as music director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia. His earlier posts include serving as chief conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and as associate conductor of the San Francisco Symphony.

Founded in 1955, Houston Grand Opera is among the most prominent opera companies in the United States and has been recognized internationally for commissioning new works and artist development. It is a 2025 finalist for Opera Company of the Year in the International Opera Awards. ■
