The group was a “weird mix” according to Charlie and included Rob Lowe, his 7th-grade history teacher, his yoga instructor, his siblings Ramon, Emilio and Renée, and his parents.
Clint, 95, was not there in person for the “very emotional” day, but provided his support for Charlie over the phone instead.
Charlie admitted he was trying to “hatch a plan to get away” when Martin told him, “There’s someone on the phone who wants to talk to you.”
He explained how Clint said in his “very recognizable, very globally familiar voice,” that he was “worth saving.”
The pair had starred together in The Rookie, and Oscar winner Clint told him, “You’ve got to get the train back on the tracks, kid.”
Charlie recalled, “It was really powerful. I thanked him, gave the phone back to Dad and said, ‘All right, let’s go.’”

In the book, Charlie describes how he was “sloppy” on set with Clint after partying with Nicolas Cage and three other friends, a group known as J-5.
Both in the book and the docuseries, Charlie candidly open up about his past drug and alcohol addiction and his subsequent sobriety, which has seen him clean for the last seven years.
A pivotal moment for the change came in 2017 when his daughter Sami had to be driven by his friend because he was too drunk and three whiskey-laced coffees deep.
He wrote, “Sam was very quiet. I didn’t need to be clairvoyant to know exactly what she was thinking. Why is Dad not driving — again?”
Charlie drank three beers and took two Valiums the next day and after that decided to get sober.
Charlie – who is also dad to Cassandra, 40, daughter Lola, 20, and twin sons Bob and Max, 16 – wrote that Sami, 21, was not the “final straw” but “first harvest.”
