Hey, here’s a game for anybody who doesn’t religiously monitor “The Billboard Hot 100” charts: Guess how many songs Ella Langley currently has in the top five. Did you guess one? Or two? If so, you’re wrong. She in fact has three separate songs in the top five. Her duet with Morgan Wallen, “I Can’t Love You Anymore” is at No. 4; her song “Be Her” is at No. 3; and her mega-smash “Choosin’ Texas” is sitting comfy at No. 1. The only person stopping her from having the top three songs in America is Taylor Swift, whose Toy Story 5 soundtrack song “I Knew It, I Knew You,” is at No. 2. Additionally, “Choosin’ Texas” has been at the top of the charts for 13 weeks and will definitely score a 14th week. Snagging that spot will put her alongside Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston as the only women to chart a song at No. 1 for 14 weeks. (The longest-running No. 1 song of all time is Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has spent a cumulative 22 weeks on top of the chart.)

It’s almost unfathomable just how popular this country star has become. Erling Haaland, the Norwegian soccer player who became a sensation in the 2026 World Cup, was spotted hitting golf balls into the ocean while listening to Langley. And this a man who famously doesn’t even watch movies. If you don’t know her voice, then you know her face thanks to a few commercials. One from Chase Sapphire Reserve sees her getting an upgrade on a flight. “An upgrade?” she asks incredulously, which is a surprised posture she probably can’t get away with for much longer. Meanwhile, her American Eagle collab has been refreshingly controversy-free and deems her a “denim darling.” In all of these campaigns, and in her music, Langley presents as the sweet-voiced small-town girl. She’s clean and she’s accessible, but in a “wink wink” way. Her catchy songs and breezy persona are the selling point: There’s nothing too difficult about Ella Langley.

Her success is the latest development in the continued mainstreaming of country after decades on the sidelines of American music. She, Morgan Wallen, and Zach Bryan are all modern streaming superstars who are dominating the charts across the whole nation. Prior to Wallen’s “Last Night” going to No. 1 in 2023, the last country song to hit No. 1 had been Lonestar’s “Amazed” in 2000. Langley’s success is extra-sweet because of the history of misogyny in the country genre. In 2015, radio consultant Keith Hill said that women were not as important to the “salad” of country radio as the men. “The lettuce is Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and artists like that,” he added. “The tomatoes of our salad are the females.” These days, Langley is the most popular artist in America and in line to win Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. If she did that, she’d be the first country woman to win the award since Carrie Underwood. Sounds pretty important to me.
