The fantasy drama takes place about 90 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 80 years after the events of “House of the Dragon.” The series is set during a relatively peaceful time in Westeros.

The famous Targaryen family plays a role in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” The show focuses on Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell), a squire for the lowborn hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall, a.k.a. Dunk (Peter Claffey).

Aegon, who is just a boy in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” is the grandfather of Aerys II, the Mad King often mentioned in “Game of Thrones,” and the great-grandfather of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). He is also the great-great-great grandson of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy) from “House of the Dragon.”

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is based on George R. R. Martin’s novella series “Tales of Dunk and Egg.” The author also penned the “Song of Ice and Fire” series that inspired “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon.”

Like the novellas it’s based upon, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is more humorous and lighthearted than “Game of Thrones.” While the original HBO series chronicles political turmoil and the apocalyptic threat of the White Walkers, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” focuses mainly on Dunk and Egg’s travels and jousts.

The new HBO series stars Claffey, Ansell, Finn Bennett (Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen), Bertie Carvel (Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen), Tanzyn Crawford (Tanselle), Daniel Ings (Ser Lyonel Baratheon) and Sam Spruell (Prince Maekar Targaryen).

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 10 p.m. ET. New episodes premiere every Sunday.
