When Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry had their viral date in Montreal in July, the singer was fresh off her breakup with Orlando Bloom and not really looking for a new relationship.
But the former Canadian prime minister changed her mind as they continued to talk in private. This past weekend, they were photographed kissing on a yacht in Santa Barbara, California. A source told People that Trudeau has “been very respectful” but also pursued Perry because he believed in their potential as a couple.
“When she first hung out with Justin, she wasn’t looking to date, but they stayed in touch,” the insider detailed. “They have many shared interests and a lot of talk about, but Katy was navigating too many things to even think about dating then.”
Trudeau has “been pursuing her since. He even flew to California to see her during a tour break. They have an easy connection. She finds him attractive. He’s been very respectful.”
A source acknowledged Perry and Trudeau’s potential back in early August, telling People, “They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes. She is traveling around the world [on tour], and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.
“Music is one of many things they can share,” the source added. “Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.”
Perry cheekily acknowledged her and Trudeau’s new romance when a fan proposed to her at her Lifetimes Tour concert in London last night. “You heard I’m single? That’s interesting,” Perry began. When the fan popped the question, she quipped, “Are you kidding me? Not today! You know, you really should have asked me about 48 hours ago.”
Perry and her ex Bloom confirmed they ended their engagement in June, noting that the two remain committed to co-parenting their 5-year-old daughter, Daisy.
