Centuries ago, there were no photos, videos, or zoos. Most medieval artists had never seen exotic animals with their own eyes.
Instead, they relied on written descriptions, stories, and second-hand accounts.
So while they could draw horses perfectly, animals like lions, elephants, and crocodiles were often based entirely on imagination.
The results were sometimes surprisingly accurate… and sometimes hilariously wrong.
