MILWAUKEE — Long before the horror/sci-fi flick “Backrooms” hit theaters nationwide on Friday, an old picture of a former backroom in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, started to get some unanticipated traction on the internet.
“We were going viral on TikTok because of the back rooms, which I had never heard about,” said Mike McArthur, the local history and genealogy librarian at the Oshkosh Public Library. “It was all connected to this picture, this famous picture you’ve been seeing with the yellow walls with no one in it that had been floating around the internet for years, and what happened is that people finally found where that picture came from.”
That picture — tied to Rohner’s Furniture in Oshkosh and posted by HobbyTown USA — has gone on to internet infamy, as things with unanticipated starts tend to do, serving as a backdrop for internet memes, GIFs and creative videos. And now it’s been elevated to the inspiration for a potential Hollywood blockbuster.
“It’s kind of neat being at the center of that,” McArthur said. “It’s amazing to see high production and movie stars in this thing that all got started by a picture taken by someone here in Oshkosh.”
