How Taylor Swift’s Mom Helped Spark Her Romance With Travis Kelce

In episode 4 of Taylor Swift’s docuseries, The End of an Era, the singer’s mom, Andrea, opened up about setting her up with Travis Kelce.
She recalled seeing headlines about Kelce bringing a friendship bracelet with his number on it to Swift’s concert in hopes of meeting the pop star in July 2023.
Andrea thought the gesture was “sweet,” and after getting intel from her cousin, a Chiefs fan, she encouraged her daughter to meet the NFL star.

Taylor Swift’s mom, Andrea, has always been one of her biggest supporters —and, as viewers saw in The End of an Era, sometimes a not-so-subtle matchmaker, too.

In episode 4 of Swift’s Disney+ docuseries, released on December 19, Andrea opened up about nudging her daughter toward Travis Kelce after the Kansas City Chiefs player admitted on his podcast, New Heights, that he’d tried—and failed—to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number at one of her shows.

Andrea recalled the story while Swift relaxed backstage at one of her Eras Tour stops. She remembered stumbling across headlines about Kelce’s interest online and, intrigued, reaching out to her cousin, Robin, whom she described as “my resident expert on the Kansas City Chiefs.”

“She said, ‘Oh, my God. He’s the nicest guy. And you know what? He really loves his mom, [Donna Kelce],’” Andrea noted. That detail, Andrea admitted, sealed it: “I went, ‘Ding, ding, ding, ding. Now, how in the world am I gonna get her to meet him?’”

Swift acknowledged that her romantic past hadn’t exactly included many pro athletes. “I’ve been very non-athlete, because I’m not one, and I’ve always just been like, ‘Well, what would we talk about?’” the pop star said. “And so you call me up with this tone of, like, ‘Hey, so I know you’re gonna not react well to this. But there’s a guy…You said something to the effect of, ‘You’ve got to start doing something different.’”

Andrea, for her part, summed up her enthusiasm simply, adding that Kelce is “really cute.” She continued, “Listen, it was so earnest. I thought it was the sweetest thing in the world that he came to your show. He brought you something from your world. To me, that really said a lot. So I thought that was really sweet, and I liked it.”

Swift then reflected on her first date with Kelce, saying he “had to explain football as if it were violent chess, which kind of helped me understand it—like high-speed angry chess.” She added, “And then I just sort of became obsessed with him and, therefore, became obsessed with learning about football—greatest surprise of my life.”

Swift and Kelce began dating sometime around September 2023 and got engaged in August of this year, shortly after Swift appeared on New Heights. During the episode, the “Opalite” singer shared her thoughts on Kelce shooting his shot on the podcast two years prior.

“It was wild but it worked. I’m glad it worked,” she said before gesturing to Kelce and adding, “I’m just circling back to New Heights to say thank you for this.” She also revealed her favorite things about the NFL star, including “the way he could make me laugh so immediately.” She added, “Travis is just a vibe booster in everyone’s life he’s in. He’s a human exclamation point.” She told him, “You’re so nonjudgmental about people, and you were nonjudgmental [about me not knowing anything about football]…You were so nice.”

Episodes 1–4 of The End of an Era are now streaming on Disney+, with the final installments set to arrive on December 23.
