Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor faces yet another public setback as councillors in Scotland have voted to replace a stone slab commemorating a 2002 visit by the former prince to Alloa in Clackmannanshire. Council leader Ellen Forson successfully proposed a motion to remove it, which councillors supported. The stone is located along the route near the council’s Kilncraigs headquarters, on the pathway leading to Alloa Tower.
In its place, councillors approved a plan to install a memorial stone honouring the late Sir George Reid, former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, who passed away in August last year, BBC reported. Forson said she had received several messages from local residents raising concerns about the slab commemorating the former prince.
She said: “For me, it is a straightforward issue about who and why we choose to recognise in our shared civic spaces.
“I believe it is appropriate that the existing reference to the former Prince Andrew is removed.”
The motion emphasised that public honours should “command public confidence and reflect the values and integrity expected by our communities”.
Council staff will now begin developing the design and inscription for the replacement memorial stone.
Forson added that Sir George’s contributions remain influential and continue to resonate throughout Clackmannanshire and beyond.
“Adding a slab that commemorates George Reid is about recognising his contribution but also, in moving forward, we are ensuring that what we choose to commemorate are people who are important to Clackmannanshire,” she concluded.
