Zoe Delaney is a journalist from Lancashire who is currently based in Liverpool and working as an Assistant Showbiz Editor for the Mirror.

She is a Gwyneth Paltrow apologist, is always rooting for Lindsay Lohan and her most useless talent is being able to recite the scripts of Phoenix Nights episodes off by heart.

Away from the world of celebrity, Zoe has a keen interest in politics and organisations working towards making careers in the arts more accessible to those from working class backgrounds.

Hushtones’ new album proves just why the Liverpool band are tipped for the top

There is a chance you have already heard distinctive blend of male-female dual vocals thanks to the band from Liverpool having no shortage of celebrity fans. With multiple spins on BBC 6music from Craig Charles and Chris Hawkins, support from BBC Radio 1, and glowing praise from music reviewers across the world, Hushtones are certainly a group to keep an eye on over the next few months.

Formed in the heart of Liverpool, Hushtones is made up of Martha, Mick, Caitlin, Abe, and Joe, who found each other through the city’s vibrant grassroots music scene.

From open mic nights to pub jam sessions, their journey is steeped in the kind of DIY ethos and community spirit that has long defined Liverpool’s musical legacy.

Written over the course of two years, their new album Wildflower in the Mystery elevates the Hushtones to a new level and marks a new chapter for the group.

The record’s lead single Stupid Things, out now, is the perfect track to tease the joys that await listeners when Wildflower in the Mystery is released September 19.

Upbeat, energetic and with an exciting rhythm section and synth pop riff, Stupid Things is indie-pop perfection. Vocalist Martha explains how the group were inspired by frustrations the daily grind presents and wanting to escape into nature.

This is a theme that underpins a lot of the music we write and this song is the deep dive into it. ‘Stupid things’ are all of the unnecessary possessions we have that clutter our daily lives,” she tells us.

Wildflower in the Mystery feels tailor-made to say goodbye to the summer and soundtrack your favourite memories; it plays in the car as you wind down the window on an unexpectedly sunny day. You hear it at your favourite bar as you order another round of drinks after work on a Friday. You discover it live at a festival as you bask in the sun with your favourite people in the world, without a care in the world. You listen knowing that hearing the songs again in years to come will make you smile and only remember the good times.

This album transports the listener to bygone eras at times, an unconscious homage to groups and artists that peaked before the band members were even born.

But by the final track of Wildflower in the Mystery, you can’t help wondering if we’re also on the cusp of a new era for music, a sound yet to be defined but almost certainly to be led by the Hushtones.

‘Stupid Things’ is out now on all major streaming platforms. Pre-save Wildflower in the Mystery, out 19th September.
