John James, a founding member and former lead singer of Newsboys, provided ChurchLeaders with an exclusive interview to discuss a new personal tell-all book, new music, and his reaction to last year’s Newsboys scandal.

James carried lead vocal duties for Newsboys from the early 1980s to 1997, appearing on the albums “Read All About It,” “Hell Is for Wimps,” “Boys Will Be Boyz,” “Not Ashamed,” “Going Public,” and “Take Me to Your Leader.”

He left the band in 1997 after personal failures he described as sinful choices that led to the loss of his marriage, family, career, and ministry.

James said the culture of fame and success can intensify pressure on a person’s character and relationships, emphasizing that redemption was not instant and that consequences remained even as he experienced forgiveness and healing.

During the interview, James credited the local church for helping him rebuild his life, calling it a “hospital” for broken people and describing recovery as a day-by-day process marked by setbacks and perseverance.

The former Newsboys singer is now set to share his story through a forthcoming book, “Newsboy: My Story of Hope and Second Chances,” and has returned to writing and recording music after three decades away.

James also discussed how he processed sexual abuse allegations involving former Newsboys frontman Michael Tait, saying he was shocked and grieved, while still hoping for accountability, healing for victims, and the possibility of redemption. He urged Christian leaders and artists to prioritize daily devotion to God, protect their families, and stay grounded in a local church community with real accountability.

John James: ‘I Wouldn’t Be Here if It Wasn’t for the Miracle of the Local Church Family’

It was at the height of the Newsboys’ success that James’ whole world came crashing down.

One doesn’t “really realize when you start to walk into, what sort of pressure the lifestyle, the success, the houses, the cars, the autographs, the concerts, the living the dream of the blessed life in America,” James said. “What sort of pressure can that put on your character, on your foundation, on your marriage, on your relationships, on your ideology, [and] on your ego.”

“And at the heights of success I found out, mate—gaining the world so to speak—and you know as one of the biggest Christian bands in the world,” he continued. “My whole world came crashing down because of really tragic and toxic and terrible sinful choices I made in my life that shipwrecked everything that I held dear and I loved.”

“I paid a tragic price at heights of success,” James added. “I lost my marriage. I lost my family. I lost my career, my ministry, everything. I guess statistically the world would look at me and said, ‘Strike three, game over. No hope for you.’”

But, he said, “I stand here today as a testament of this incredible God who continues to pursue his creation with a redemptive love.”

God led James back to the foot of the cross by demonstrating grace, mercy, and love and placed him on a road to redemption, but he shared that didn’t “magically” fix everything.

“People sometimes ask, ‘That redemptive road, does that mean everything was just magically fixed?’ And I say, ‘Unfortunately, no,’” James said. “Because there’s always consequences to sin and you live with the consequences of those choices. You carry those scars for the rest of your life. And unfortunately, I lost my first marriage, my time, my career, my ministry. I lost everything.”
