A Peaky Blinders movie extra has given us an inside look into what filming some scenes were really like – including Cillian Murphy’s off camera behaviour and ‘incredible’ set
Adam Crolla, an extra on the Peaky Blinders movie, has opened up on his experience working on such a high-profile show, as well as revealing what Cillian Murphy is like when the cameras stopped rolling. Peaky Blinders has become one of the most acclaimed TV dramas since its launch in 2013, and fans were thrilled when Peaky Blinders: The Immortal arrived globally on Netflix.
Set in 1920s Birmingham, the movie follows Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy), who is forced out of retirement to save his son Duke Shelby (Barry Keoghan), after the youngster gets caught up in a Nazi plot to win WWII.
Opening up on his own role in the movie, Adam said: “It wasn’t a speaking role. There were over 150 extras on the first day and around 30 on the second. During the boxing match scene, I had to react with shock and fear when Tommy (Cillian) got in the ring and fired a gun.

I was instructed to duck and look uneasy as he spoke. On the second day, I was simply walking down a staircase behind him in Parliament. Being an extra mostly involves basic actions rather than detailed direction.”

Adam Crolla, who first appeared as an extra in 2017, told Betway: “During rehearsals, when Tommy (Cillian) got into the ring, he once used his fingers as a gun and shouted “bang! bang!” instead of firing a prop”, adding: “It was hilarious to see compared to how much he stayed in character during actual takes.”
Adam also added that he loved seeing other main actors “fully inhabited their characters”, which he said they did “even when they weren’t the focus of the scene”.
Adam said the set at the Liverpool Astoria was ‘incredible’ and even the ‘tiniest details were considered. “like period-accurate coins at a betting table, or tickets littered on the floor with real fight schedules. It genuinely felt like stepping back in time”, he reflected.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man has already been out in select cinemas since March 6 – spoilers coming.
The film essentially closed the door on the current generation of Shelbys, who met their demises in various ways. Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) is taken out by his beloved younger brother Tommy before the events of the film.
Tommy finally got the peace he’d been craving for so long after he too died. Prior to this, Tommy was living in exile in an empty mansion with the ghosts of his loved ones and his last true friend, Johnny Dogs (Packy Lee).
The Immortal Man ended with the sun rising on a new era of the Shelby family with Duke at the forefront as the new leader of the infamous Birmingham gang.
