Classic rock band Deep Purple has released a new single, “Guilt Trippin’,” just a few days before the release of their new studio album, “Splat!” out on July 3 via earMUSIC. The new track is streaming on YouTube and all the usual streaming and digital download platforms.
“Guilt Trippin'” kicks off with gentle piano playing, but that doesn’t last long. The track quickly accelerates into a hard-charging rock anthem, featuring powerful vocals from Ian Gillan. What’s unique is that Gillan actually screams in this song. It’s something he didn’t expect to do, especially at his age of 80, but it naturally happened. He says it just felt right. Age is just a number, right?
“The song starts, and I’m in the studio. I don’t have any words for it yet,” Gillan said in a statement about the song provided to Newsweek. “So, I just start screaming. It was the pure joy of yelling it. I vowed when I was 40 that I’d stop screaming by the time I was 60.”

He added: “Now I’m looking back and thinking, ‘Whatever happened to that?’ So, we’ll give it a go.”
Deep Purple features Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey and Simon McBride. The band is currently on a massive run of European summer dates ahead of their tour reaching North America later in the run. Tickets are available on the band’s official website.

Even though “Splat!” isn’t out for another week and some change, the songs Deep Purple have released off the set shows that this band is staying innovative and fresh even decades into their career. It’s rare for a band with this kind of legacy to continue to make new music. That’s a gift, and the rock and metal world is better for it.
