Prepare to have The Simpsons theme song stuck in your head for the foreseeable future.
It appears that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are gathering their things to return to the silver screen in 2027.
20th Century Studios posted an encouraging update to X and Instagram on Monday, September 29, saying, “Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!”
The animated graphic accompanying the post’s text shows Homer’s hand grabbing a donut decorated with the number “2” — confirming a sequel to the 2007 movie is on the way.
“Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the X post’s graphic also reads, along with the official theatrical release date in the bottom-left corner.
What’s also worthy of note, as Variety reported on Monday, is that The Simpsons 2 has taken the place of an untitled Marvel project, which has now been removed from the studio’s schedule.
Disney and 20th Century haven’t confirmed any Simpsons 2 plot details — besides the comedic tagline in Monday’s social media post, of course.
The first Simpsons movie was a critical and commercial hit, opening to $74 million and making $183 million domestically as well as over $536 million worldwide, Deadline reports.
Created by Matt Groening, the beloved animated series on Fox holds the record as the longest-running American primetime scripted television show of all time.
Added to that, over its more than three decades, 36 seasons and 790 episodes, the show’s writers have scripted eerily prescient plotlines about politics, math and science, commerce, pop culture, sports and, of course, entertainment. The jaw-dropping bits that later came true include:

the correct teams winning the Super Bowl
a tiger attacking the Siegfried and Roy show
a submersible malfunctioning in the ocean
