One momfluencer’s rules for her children during the school year is sparking debate on her social media page.

Vidya Gopalon, known online to her nearly 5 million social media followers as @queencitytrends, recently prompted discussion amongst her followers after sharing her set of rules for her teenage daughter online.

The lifestyle and parenting content creator frequently makes videos documenting her life with her two children and her husband, Rakesh, who viewers know online as Pookesh.

In the comments of the video, which now has nearly 10 million views, some called the requirements “strict” and “crazy.”

In her caption, Gopalon wrote, “Keep in mind…this is what works for us. Of course y’all can do whatever you want in your home 🏡 that works for you 😘.”

Gopalon breaks down the specific set of rules that she has for her teen daughter, Sahana, during the school year — including rules that touch on technology usage, school preparedness and more.

In a get ready with me-style video, the mom of two sat down to do her makeup, while sharing the rules she enforces for her daughter, who is going into 8th grade, during the school year.

“Number one, first is you’re not allowed to watch any TV or play any games on your phone Monday to Thursday,” Gopalon says in the video.

However, she clarified that there is some “flexibility” to the rules, citing her daughter’s obsession with the TV show The Summer I Turned Pretty as an exception to the rule.

“She got to watch the new episode,” the influencer explained of the show, which released its series finale on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Gopalon’s second rule, she says, is aimed toward teaching her children “responsibility.”

“You have to pack everything that you need the night before for school: change of clothes for sports, water bottle, iPad, homework. If you forget it, I will not be dropping it off,” the influencer said.

Gopalon’s third rule sparked discussion in the comments as the influencer revealed that her children were not allowed to have phones near them when they were doing their homework.

“It’s such a big distraction,” she said of the devices. “If you keep getting text messages and Snapchats, you are not gonna be able to focus.”

One of her other rules was that her children are not able to keep their phones charging in their rooms while they slept at night.

In a similar vein, the influencer shared that she and her husband are allowed to do “periodical phone checks” of their kids phones, sharing that they have a specific service from Verizon on their phones that “monitors” what their kids are doing.

Gopalon even admitted that her final rule could be “controversial,” revealing to followers that she expected her two children to get A’s.

“Are they gonna stumble here and there? Of course. But the expectation is to do really well in school,” she said.

Viewers weighed in in the comments with some expressing support for the couple’s rules. One commenter said, “None of this is controversial, I think it’s a necessity. You’re protecting them and teaching them responsibility!!!”

Another agreed, but pushed back on the influencer’s rules regarding straight A’s for her kids, writing “As an education major and teacher I LOVE all of these rules except the all A’s expectation. It’s not healthy, you can encourage good grades without them HAVING to have ALL A’s…”

However, others expressed more distaste for all of the influencers rules, with one viewer writing, “Strict parents raise sneaky kids.”

Another weighed in on the TV restriction, asking for clarification, “No tv Monday thru Thursday is a lil crazy. They do 8 hours of school, a few hours of homework and curriculars, they can’t unwind with an episode or 2 of tv bc it’s a weekday?”

Gopalon responded to the commenter, writing simply, “Yes. You got it 👍🏾.”

Some also took aim at the influencers rules regarding phones, pointing out the hypocrisy between her job as an influencer and the heavy restrictions she is placing on her children.

“All these rules around technology when your [sic] an influencer is crazy,” the commenter said.

The comment has since received over 82,000 likes and nearly 300 replies, with others weighing in with their opinions.

“Personally, I don’t think any of these rules are really that strict,” Gopalon ended the video.
