‘Michael Jackson: The Verdict’: 6 takeaways from the documentary

Does ‘Masters of the Universe’ have mid-credits scenes or post-credits scenes? Here’s the spoiler-free answer.

The Paradise Fire, which is better known as the Camp Fire of 2018, is the subject of The Lost Bus. After its launch on Apple TV+, it garnered plenty of attention, not only for its impressive cast but also for its roots in real tragedy and heroism. Paul Greengrass directs the film, which stars Matthew McConaughey as the central character, Kevin McKay, and America Ferrera (playing alongside him as Mary Ludwig).

The real-life Camp Fire of 2018 remains one of California’s deadliest wildfires, and the story of McKay driving a bus through smoke, fire and chaos to try to rescue school children has certainly caught public attention. So the big question, do the kids survive in The Lost Bus, is a huge mystery for audiences going into the movie without prior knowledge. Here’s what viewers should know before they watch the equally inspirational and shocking film.

How many people died in the Paradise fire?

The wildfire that this film is based on began on Nov. 8, 2018. It started in Butte County, California in the north and made a big impact on the area. As Time reports, this fatal incident was sparked by faulty PG&E electrical equipment. This aging transmission line failed and started a blaze that became furious with the surrounding weather conditions. It was further aggravated by some high winds and bone-dry vegetation, which caused it to roar through Paradise and its surrounding communities.

Sadly, this wildfire resulted in the death of 85 people, making it one of the deadliest wildfires in California’s history, as reported by Butte County. Beyond human lives, there were other losses as well. There was an enormous amount of material cost, which ultimately impacted lives in the area, per People. Nearly 19,000 structures were destroyed in its wake and more than 50,000 people were displaced. The scale of destruction was almost total, with about 90 percent of Paradise being completely leveled and many neighborhoods vanishing under ash and fire.

Did Kevin McKay’s family survive?

In The Lost Bus, tension is drawn around Kevin McKay’s uncertainty over whether his son and mother are alive. This dramatic framing makes it seem as though he has to choose between saving others and learning the fate of his own family. Sources, like SoapCentral, confirm that McKay already knew his family was safe before he embarked on the risky journey to save as many kids as he could. So, in real life, McKay’s teenage son, Shaun, and his mother had evacuated ahead of time to a hotel in Chico.

As often happens in films based on real events, the narrative is compressed and dramatized so the emotional stakes are a bit higher than in real life. Yet, as The Guardian confirms, McKay’s life had been touched by harsh circumstances before the tragedy of the fire. He had recently lost his father to cancer, was navigating a divorce and custody battle and caring for his mother with stage four melanoma. He had even recently decided to give up a more stable job, running a Walgreens, to return to school and drive school buses to pay tuition. So, yes, McKay’s family survived, which likely gave him more courage to secure the safety of others, much like he had done in his day-to-day life.

How does the movie ‘The Lost Bus’ end?

The ending of The Lost Bus balances the suspenseful, survival and redemptive storyline but also has a strong thematic tone. And as SoapCentral reports, the climactic ending builds to a point where the bus, which is loaded with 22 children (plus the adults) is seemingly on its last legs. As the survivors crawl through smoke, collapsed infrastructure and raging fire, hope prevails. In one moment, Kevin shuts down the engine and vents to conserve air, as the level of smoke infiltration has steadily grown.

Then Kevin and Mary fashion makeshift breathing masks from wet, torn cloth. But when the engine falters, Kevin repairs and restarts it in just the nick of time to pull them through a line of collapsing trees and fire lines. Eventually, they break through the smoky tunnel to arrive at the Chico evacuation center, where all the children are reunited with their parents and first responders.

Yet much of the emotional climax centers on Kevin finding his son. In a dramatized moment, Kevin arrives at his charred home to find a photo of himself with his son amongst the ruins. Then his son Shaun (played by Levi McConaughey) suddenly appears and walks out of a car with his mom, and they run into an embrace.

Where is Kevin McKay today?

Fans of the film can gain a partial insight into McKay’s life today, as he is a relatively private person. Although he once worked as a school bus driver, he continued to pursue his education and became a teacher at Fairview High School. He finished his degree in history at California State UniUniversity, Chico, and got his teaching credentials.

And as many fans might have guessed, he played a part in his on-screen portrayal. Per Action News Now, he consulted with production to ensure authenticity and help ground it all in reality. He even went on to say how, “I got to share my perspective and a lot of that perspective made it into the film and some very key moments. The authenticity that Apple was looking to come up with, the filmmaker, Paul Greengrass, wanted this to be authentic and true to the story.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Kevin McKay get an award?

While McKay has been honored by the community and by this film release, he has not formally accepted any awards for his heroic actions.

Is Matthew McConaughey’s son in The Lost Bus?

Yes, his son Levi McConaughey is also in the movie. He plays Kevin’s son, Shaun, but, as reported by People, some steps were taken to avoid casting him due to nepotism. Matthew requested that his son’s last name be removed when he submitted for the roll to avoid bias.
