Netflix’s The Witcher has been renewed for a fourth season, but Henry Cavill will not be reprising his role as Geralt of Rivia. Here’s why the actor decided to leave the show
The Witcher, the hit fantasy series on Netflix, is returning with a major twist.
Henry Cavill, who brilliantly portrayed the lead character, has decided to step down from his role. Cavill brought Geralt of Rivia to life for three seasons, leaving fans heartbroken when he chose to leave the show, with Liam Hemsworth now stepping into his shoes.
This news comes despite predictions that the show will run for at least two more seasons before wrapping up the storyline. This isn’t Cavill’s first time playing an iconic character, having previously portrayed Superman in three DC films, not including brief cameo appearances.

He also starred in Mission: Impossible Fallout and the period drama The Tudors, reports the Express.
In a social media post announcing his departure from the Netflix show, Cavill wrote: “Some news to share from The Continent… My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.
“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Supporters have since posted their own theories and speculation on social media, attempting to identify the genuine reason behind Cavill’s exit from the show.
Many suspect it’s a combination of creative disputes with the screenwriters and his ambition to pursue other projects.
It’s well-known that Cavill was a devoted admirer of the original Witcher books and the critically acclaimed video game adaptation. The show has encountered heavy criticism for straying from its source material.
Beau DeMayo, a former producer and writer for the series, even alleged that some on the writing staff ‘actively disliked’ both Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and CD Projekt Red’s interpretations. During a Q&A session about his work on the Marvel animated series X-Men 97, he disclosed: “I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material).”
He continued: “It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”
Cavill wants to remain faithful
Cavill has previously expressed his dedication to remaining faithful to the original material. While promoting the second season, he shared: “It’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional. And it’s tricky to do, as I was saying earlier, because there’s a certain vision and there’s a certain set storyline and plot. And so, it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place within that. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”
Cavill is also known for his desire to bring Warhammer 40,000 to the screen, another franchise he’s deeply passionate about.
Although reportedly in development at Amazon, the project seems to be moving slowly. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich has since spoken about the casting change.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she disclosed that Cavill had “plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to”.
At first, some thought this might refer to another Superman film, but James Gunn later recast that role for his reboot of the DC cinematic universe.
Hissrich added: “And for us, you don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do. I think that’s why it felt like a really symbiotic decision.”
The Witcher is currently available on Netflix.
