According to a statement from publicist Jeff Sanderson at the time, the icon died at his farmhouse near Westport, Conn, surrounded by his family and close friends.
For Robert Redford, the death of his beloved friend was a bitter pill to swallow.
Speaking about tragedy, he revealed in a statement, “There is a point where feeling go beyond words.”
He described the actor as a “real friend,” adding that both his own life and the country were better because Paul had been in it.

His death was confirmed by his publicist, Cindi Berger. According to Berger, Redford died in his sleep, with no cause of death publicly disclosed. He died surrounded by loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, his two daughters, Shauna and Amy, and seven grandchildren.
