In Outlander: Blood of My Blood, one of the most intense moments in the season comes during episode six, when Julia, played by Hermione Corfield, is forced to give birth under duress at Castle Leathers. “As an actor, it’s a dream. You want that sort of material to work with,” she tells Town & Country. “I remember thinking, this is going to be a long week, but also a really rewarding acting exercise. I tend to approach headspace not through substitution, but by remembering a feeling or sensation that’s close to the experience and tapping into that.”
The episode is a rollercoaster for viewers with two very contrasting scenes: one revealing Claire’s arrival in the 20th century, where Julia and Henry are still together and full of hope; the other depicting Julia in captivity, emotionally alone and giving birth to a son—Claire’s brother—whose fate remains unknown, surrounded not by comfort but by women cursing her in a dungeon.

Corfield’s on-screen partner Jeremy Irvine, who plays Henry Beauchamp, says that the aftermath of the birth—when Henry believes Julia and the baby have died—is equally central to the emotional arc. “He fully breaks. His heart is ripped out,” he tells T&C. The grief leads to a hallucinatory moment of imagined reunion, one Irvine said was intended to feel disorienting: “I thought it would be interesting, and hopefully a little unsettling, to see extreme grief suddenly turn into elation.”

The decision to depict Julia’s labor with such detail speaks to a larger theme of generational mirroring, something Outlander has long played with across timelines. Corfield emphasized that her portrayal of Julia wasn’t designed to imitate Caitríona Balfe’s Claire, but instead to trace emotional echoes.
“We’re not carbon copies of our parents,” she said. “So it was more about finding traits in Claire that I thought could be a common thread with Julia.”
