Interview: Miss Lilly On Family, Creativity and New Music – Stanisland Magazine

Miss Lilly is a trailblazing London-based vocalist with an explosive sound that drills its way into your head

Great talent meets fresh music — the two best ingredients one can ask for. Cooking up both is Miss Lilly, one of the most exciting talents emerging from the UK, creating a raft of infectiously replayable pop-meets-R&B songs. From her debut track, “Runaway“, to her latest drop, “Margo“, the London-based polymath is doubling down on just how good she is, and that’s an understatement. With a close-knit group of padres in the mix, there’s so more to come from the virtuoso. Let’s find out what we need to know.

Stream new music from Miss Lilly, including “Runaway” and “Margo”.

You’ve got a truly unique sound. Where did it come from?

“I’d say my sound comes from me and my brother listening to my mum’s music in the car when we were kids, and all the family functions growing up. ’80s soul, new jack swing and old-school R&B are some of the main genres I grew up on, so all the melodies and bass lines of that era naturally come out when I write music.”

Talk us through your creative process. Do you wait for inspiration to strike or are you proactive about gathering triggers?

“I wait for inspiration to strike me. I never like to force it because then it’s no fun! I also like to think of any ideas that come into my head as a download from whatever is above and I’m just the vessel for the art to come out and reach people.”

Correct me if I’m wrong — your music has been produced by your brother? What a talent! Does this make the process easier?

“Yes all my music is produced by my brother. We’ve grown up together so there’s an unspoken understanding when it comes to creating. That being said we are very different people so we both bring our own character to the songs.”

With this much fire in the tank, is there an EP or long play in the works?

“There’s much more music coming which I’m very excited about. New music is in the works!! “

I hear your art extends beyond music. Can you tell us about that?

“I started my creative journey with dance, which progressed into musical theatre and then television acting. Then I studied film at college, which was one of the best things I’ve ever done. That’s where I learned how to edit and began learning how to direct. I also started to write songs at this time but never really took it seriously. I felt quite lost before I decided to fully pursue music because I was doing all of these creative things but didn’t know what to do with it all. Then I realised I can put all of it into my music and be an artist.”

How does it assist, if at all, your sound?

“Studying lots of different creative mediums has done nothing but enhance my taste so far, and I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to study so many different sides of art.”

“Margo” is out now. What’s the story behind it?

“I wrote “Margo” at a time where I was getting a lot of imposter syndrome, but I didn’t know that at the time, so it made it easier to personify the feeling. “Margo” represents all of the intrusive thoughts and negative feelings we have as humans. “

Do you have any gigs coming up?

“I’m going to be playing at Kendall Calling and Tramlines Festival this summer, and I’ve also got some more festivals yet to be announced. Super excited for it all, and I can’t wait to sing and dance with everyone.”
