A beloved children’s show is coming back after 20 years off the air.
New episodes of “Reading Rainbow,” which aired on PBS from 1983-2006, are coming soon. LeVar Burton helmed the original program, which encouraged children to fall in love with books. TikTok star Mychal Threets will take over as host for the “Reading Rainbow” revival.
Threets, who is a librarian and literacy advocate, is known for posting library-related content on TikTok. He shares book recommendations and information about library services.
New episodes of “Reading Rainbow” will be released via the YouTube channel Kidzuko, which is owned by Sony. Production of the series is handled by WNED parent company Buffalo Toronto Public Media.
A trailer for the “Reading Rainbow” revival teases special guests including “Dancing With the Stars” pros Rylee Arnold and Ezra Sosa and “The Bear” actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
“Reading Rainbow is returning to motivate, help, and encourage kids to become avid readers with new episodes, new friends, new projects, and of course … new books,” Threets wrote via TikTok alongside the trailer.
Fans of Threets reacted to the news in the comments section.
“There is no single person better suited to fill Levar Burton’s shoes. You earned this Mychal. You deserve it,” one TikTok user wrote.

Threets gave a shout-out to Burton via Threads on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
“I am a reader, I am a librarian because LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow so powerfully made us believe we belong in books, we belong everywhere,” he wrote. “I am so happy for all of us that Reading Rainbow is returning! YOU all did this!”
New episodes of “Reading Rainbow” will premiere at 10 a.m. ET every Saturday during October on the KidZuko YouTube Channel. Episodes will also be available on the “Reading Rainbow” website.
