Belinda Carlisle is back!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and lead of the Go-Go’s, is releasing her ninth studio album, Once Upon a Time in California, on Aug. 29.
The album consists of 10 new tracks, including her newly released cover of the Harry Nilsson classic, “One,” which followed the lead single off the album — a fresh take on The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe,” which first dropped in June.
Carlisle admits that her take on “One” was a departure for her.
“It was fun covering this song that I always loved,” she said. “I listened to different versions and we decided to go for more of a jazzy approach which fit with the video concept which is a nod to Bob Fosse. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I think it might be a surprise for some of my fans.”
According to a press release, Once Upon a Time in California is “a loving tribute to the melodies and memories of her youth.”
The album’s track list includes her take on a heartfelt roll call of classics — Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s “Anyone Who Had a Heart” as well as favorites like “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Never My Love,” “Time in a Bottle,” “Superstar,” “Everybody’s Talkin’,” “Reflections of My Life,” and more.
“I was born and raised in California at a time when music was an important part of Californian culture,” Carlisle said of the project. “This collection of songs is the best representation of what I loved back then that I could think of — listening to it brings back so many memories of a time and a California that doesn’t really exist anymore.”
Once Upon a Time in California will be available on CD, vinyl (including picture disc and signed editions), and digital platforms on Aug. 29.
