On his very last day as a royal guard, Peter Ellis quietly walked over to greet one of his fellow guards on duty at Horse Guards Parade in London. The moment the horse saw him, something shifted. It instantly recognized Peter and kept moving closer to him, again and again, as if it could not bear to be ignored. The horse leaned its head toward him every time, refusing to look away. Just before walking away forever, Peter finally turned back. He leaned in and gently kissed the horse goodbye, one tender farewell between a soldier and the companion who had silently meant everything.
