October 1 marks the 22nd anniversary of Kelly Monaco’s General Hospital debut as Sam McCall. And it should be an occasion for celebrating. Except that right around this time in 2024, fans were left reeling from the news that she’d been let go by the soap that had courted her following the cancellation of its spinoff, Port Charles (where she’d played vampish Livvie Locke).
Why Was Monaco Given the Chop?
The reason that Monaco was axed remains shrouded in mystery. She herself has said that “when Billy Miller was fired [as Drew in 2019], Sam’s storyline stopped. Stripping Sam of every characteristic she had. Something I worked for decades to build… Slowly dismantling her, into a character that I did not recognize, let alone the audience.

“Call it what you will… retaliation at it[s] finest,” she added. But the “proper statement” that she intended to give has yet to materialize.
Maybe it doesn’t need to.

Why Not Just Bring Monaco Back as Sam?
It sounds like something went down behind the scenes. We have no idea. But we’ve seen fences be mended. We’ve seen new beginnings get started. We’ve seen pages turned. So maybe General Hospital could just resurrect Sam the way that it has Jason, Britt, Nathan… Heck, half the cast.
What fan wouldn’t be thrilled to have Sam back in action to read ex-husband Drew the riot act for the absolute [bleep] he’s become. And since Dante has yet to move on, Sam and her newly minted fiancé could pick up right where they left off. (Sucks to be you, Lulu!)
