ITV Studios has bought the international production rights to the controversial reality show, Solitary. The show ran on Fox from 2006 to 2010 and was widely known for its brutal and isolationist practices. Famously, contestants were never told the status of their competitors, causing many to push themselves beyond their limits in an attempt to win. All in all, the show felt extremely dystopian during its original run, so ITV Studios might have to doctor the show to make it slightly less intense.
The original show was somewhat similar to the segment of the Japanese reality show A Life of Prizes. In the show, a man named Nasubi was isolated for over two years and was only able to get basic supplies through mail-in raffles. While Solitary is much less demeaning, the original show somewhat bordered on the edge of dystopian tragedy. Many segments of the show would end up going viral due to the sheer nature of the brutality the contestants are subjected to.
Since Reality TV rules have gotten much stricter in recent years, ITV Studios will most likely be restructuring the rules for the entire game. However, this begs a serious question about the future of the show. How far can the studio change the rules while keeping the original concept intact? Either way, depending on how severely the studio intends to restructure the show, it could end up losing much of its original audience.
ITV Studios is a well-known European production studio that has produced notable titles like Love Island Australia, Billy Connolly’s Journey to the Edge of the World, and Coronation St. With titles like Solitary now under their belt, it appears like the studio is attempting to create a larger repertoire of reality shows.
Overall, this reality show edition will likely only help the studio become even more reputable. Solitary was extremely popular during its initial run, but many fans recognized the more disparaging aspects of the competition show. While these are most likely to be amended before the show airs again, only time will tell if this affects the number of viewers and their ratings.
