So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
PELICAN – “CASCADING CRESCENT” (ft. GEOFF RICKLY)
Previously released as a vinyl-only single, Pelican have now digitally-released and made a music video for the vocal version of their song “Cascading Crescent” from this year’s Flickering Resonance, with Thursday’s Geoff Rickly on guest lead vocals. The song is a totally different beast than the instrumental version, and Geoff’s vocals sound so natural with the song that you might be surprised it wasn’t originally written with the intention of having a singer on it. The video features live footage of Geoff singing with Pelican, and the song will be included on the upcoming Ascending EP, which features the Flickering Resonance B-side “Ascending” and two 2024 digital-only tracks, “Adrift” and “Tending the Embers.” That comes out January 23 via Run For Cover.

MX LONELY – “SHAPE OF AN ANGEL”
Mx Lonely’s new album All Monsters is out next month, and they’ve given us another preview with “Shape of an Angel.” “When I was first diagnosed with ADHD, I was prescribed a hefty script of Adderall and I fell in love…I developed a heavy dependency on these creamsicle colored miracle pills and ended up craving more and more – until it began to consume me,” vocalist and syntheist Rae Haas says. “I was constantly chasing that first dose of euphoria; refusing to look inward, continuously convincing myself ‘a higher dose will fix my problems, make me more lovable, guide me toward my goals- god dammit these drugs will make me a better person.’ You find yourself out of love with somebody but still needing them. Constantly chasing what used to be.”

SOFTCULT – “QUEEN OF NOTHING”
Softcult have shared another track off their upcoming debut album, When A Flower Doesn’t Grow. “This song is about the double standards, harsh judgements, and unrealistic expectations that patriarchal society places on women,” Mercedes Arn-Horn says. “We’re expected to be sexy, but only as it applies to the male fantasy; somehow a virgin and a slut. We’re expected to constantly nurture the men in our lives, and shamed if our aspirations exceed becoming wives and mothers. The world demands maturity from us, but discards us when we’re old and ‘unfuckable,’ our value reduced to our ability to attract men. And when we attract men, we’re labeled ‘whores.’ We’re expected to be ‘cool’ and ‘like one of the guys,’ but not too abrasive, loud, or ‘unladylike.’ Our intelligence and our success is tolerated so long as it isn’t too threatening or intimidating to our male counterparts. From unconscious biases to blatant sexism, misogyny and gender violence, women face an impossible amount of discrimination in the world today. And no matter the amount of vitriol or ignorance we endure, we’re still expected to smile. This song is about the realization that these cycles of abuse are bigger than our personal experiences. It’s recognizing the systemic nature of mistreatment and discrimination.”

The song is very merseyside psych and they say ““Dorothy walks down Ocean Avenue and sits on a bench at the edge of the sand, listening to the people, watching the sun stretch over the horizon like a jammy orange egg yolk. She talks on the telephone. She sits there until the day is done.”

COLLEEN – “ANTÍDOTO”
Colleen, aka multi-instrumentalist Cécile Schott, has announced her new album Libres antes del final, which will be out March 20 via Thrill Jockey. “Antídoto” is the ambient first single. She says, “I think the album in general has a tense and at times rather dark energy, and ‘Antídoto,’ bang in the middle of the album, acts as the positive counterweight and joyful centerpiece. It is the sun-drenched, edgy reply to moments when you feel anger, it is my musical way of saying I can turn the situation upside down and build my own antidote to the negative feelings consuming me. It has the energy of “I’m not going to let things get in my way.””
