Key Takeaways
- Jacobs Entertainment will develop 12 flat fields in downtown Reno over six years, with the first four opening summer 2026
- No new fields have been constructed in the Truckee Meadows since 2010 despite the region adding roughly 150,000 residents
- The company projects tournament demand will exceed 1,000 hotel rooms per night once fully operational
- Fields will accommodate soccer and lacrosse, which Nevada recently sanctioned as a high school sport
- The project includes launching the Downtown Reno Amateur Sports Association to attract traveling teams
Filling a Regional Infrastructure Gap
The Truckee Meadows has experienced significant population growth without corresponding youth sports infrastructure development. With approximately 150,000 new residents arriving since the last field construction in 2010, the region faces a shortage of flat playing surfaces for soccer and lacrosse.
Jacobs Entertainment’s 12-field development aims to address this capacity constraint while positioning downtown Reno as a tournament destination. The fields will accommodate 7-on-7, 9-on-9, and 11-on-11 play across all age groups.
Three of the first four fields will be located near the J Resort festival grounds, on Ralston Street at West 2nd Street, and on Washington Street south of the railroad tracks. All three sites are on land currently owned by the developer.
Tournament Model and Economic Projections
The company is establishing the Downtown Reno Amateur Sports Association to organize traveling youth sports events. “Traveling youth sports is a rapidly growing segment of Nevada’s tourism industry, and we anticipate strong demand from both local families and visitors,” said Garret Gordon, J Resort attorney. “These new fields will allow downtown Reno to host traveling youth soccer and lacrosse tournaments alike.”
Richard Jacobs, assistant director of sales and special events at J Resort, outlined the anticipated economic impact. The company projects capacity for 25 to 30 youth sports weekends annually, with approximately 25% of participating teams coming from the Reno area.
As tournament activity scales, hotel demand is expected to exceed 1,000 rooms per event night. This volume would require partnerships with other downtown properties beyond the J Resort to accommodate visiting families.
Integration with Neon Line Development
The sports fields are part of Jacobs Entertainment’s broader Neon Line initiative along the 4th Street corridor. The district currently includes three residential projects, two with affordable units. When the 57-unit Breeze project at the Bonanza Inn opens, the developer will have delivered 184 total housing units in the district, with 124 units (67%) classified as affordable.
The fields will be adjacent to ReDirect Athletics, a nonprofit providing sports programming and mentorship to local youth. This proximity creates potential for integration between tournament operations and community programming.
Regional Positioning and Timeline
The phased approach begins with four fields in summer 2026, followed by eight additional fields over the subsequent six years. This timeline allows the company to assess demand patterns and adjust operations before completing the full 12-field complex.
The development capitalizes on lacrosse’s recent addition as a sanctioned high school sport in Nevada, expanding the potential user base beyond soccer-only facilities. This dual-sport approach increases scheduling flexibility and tournament variety.
With no competing new construction since 2010, the facility enters a market with documented capacity constraints and limited alternatives for large-scale tournament hosting in the region.
