James Cameron backs Kathryn Bigelow amid debate over ‘A House of Dynamite’ ending
American filmmaker James Cameron has a firm stance on Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite.
The military thriller sparked intense debate among viewers over its divisive ending.
The movie stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris and Greta Lee in a reimagination of how US government might respond to a nuclear attack.
As the movie progresses towards its end, it appears to end in a destruction of Chicago but stops short of showing the anticipated mushroom cloud, hence ending in an abrupt moment.
The ambiguous ending has drawn criticism for being anti-climatic however James has backed Kathryn’s idea.
He told The Hollywood Reporter that he told Kathryn over dinner “I utterly defend that ending.”
“The point is: From the moment the scenario began at minute zero when the missile was launched and detected, the outcome already sucked. There was no good outcome”, he explained.
He also compared the movie to Frank R. Stockton’s classic short story The Lady, or the Tiger? where there is no climax.
James believes that it was deliberately designed to underscore the real-world consequences at stake.
