In an interview with Empire Magazine, James Cameron has admitted that he was the one originally in talks to direct the first Jurassic Park. His version of the film would’ve been rated R and featured a lot more violence compared to Spielberg’s version of the film. At this point, even Cameron himself has admitted that Spielberg was the correct choice for the film, but many fans can’t help but speculate on the Jurassic Park film they could’ve gotten.
“He was the right guy to make it. Not me, because I would have made it too terrifying and R-rated. It would have been Aliens with dinosaurs,” Cameron told Empire Magazine.
The original film was met with widespread critical acclaim and is often considered the beginning of one of the most incredible and profitable franchises today. The franchise has received consistent updates and continuations since the original came out in 1993. None of this would’ve been possible without Spielberg’s incredible first film, and it is still regularly watched to this day. In fact, many films in the franchise still break box-office records despite releasing more than two decades after the original. Yet, the world almost got a completely different version of Jurassic Park.
Universal Studios and Amblin
James Cameron’s Jurassic Park would have been vastly more violent than the somewhat family-friendly Spielberg film. Cameron has admitted that he would’ve essentially made the movie Alien, but with Dinosaurs. This is an incredible premise, but it might’ve struggled at the time. Such a violent film might not have found the same footing with ’90s audiences. Although it was certainly a grittier time for media, Spielberg’s version of the film is filled with an important nuance that is a large part of what has propelled the series into stardom.
In contrast, James Cameron’s version of the film would easily be a huge hit today. Many modern viewers crave the same violence he described in his interview and would flock to the theatres if it were ever made. Unfortunately, the director has his hands full with other projects and probably couldn’t get the licensing to create the project today. As of now, the famed director is set to create several new Avatar films, which has been the breadth of his focus since the sequel came out in 2022.
Ultimately, a James Cameron Jurassic Park would’ve been interesting, but it might have struggled in comparison to the Spielberg film. Both directors have incredible projects under their belt, but it’s incredibly difficult to imagine a version of the film that wasn’t directed by Spielberg. Nevertheless, a James Cameron version of the film would do wonders with modern audiences.
