James Gunn originally had Dave Bautista as Peacemaker before John Cena came into the DC Universe.
Bautista left WWE in 2014 and had a successful Hollywood career when he played the role Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. His was also featured in the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Over the years, Bautista built a strong acting career and became known as one of the best wrestlers-turned-actors. Appeared in movies like Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and more. While he made Drax an iconic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he almost stepped into James Gunn’s DC Universe as Peacemaker.
Speaking on The Howard Stern Show, James Gunn originally created the Peacemaker role with Dave Bautista in mind. However, Bautista chose other movie projects at the time, which opened the door for John Cena.
He said, “I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role, but [he] was offered two movies, and we weren’t paying him a lot, so he had to go where the money was.” [H/T: Fightful]
John Cena debuted as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad in 2021, and the character later headlined his own successful series, Peacemaker, which launched in 2022 to positive reviews.
The show’s second season is currently airing, with episode four scheduled to release on Thursday, September 11. Last week’s episode featured some very creative kills by Peacemaker, who used office supplies to eliminate a threat by terrorists.
