According to an interview the DC Studios co-chairman had with Bobatalks, James Gunn has been in talks with Keanu Reeves about Constantine 2. While this film would likely be a soft-reboot more than a direct continuation, it wouldn’t be the first character that Gunn has grandfathered into the new DCU. As of now, James Gunn hasn’t read any script, but it could be a matter of time before one is selected for the project. Either way, it’s more than likely that Keanu Reeves will be returning as the character if he appears in James Gunn’s MCU at all.
“I’ve discussed it on & off. I discussed it with Keanu… but I have not read any script yet,” Gunn said while talking to Bobatalks about Constantine 2.
The original Constantine is one of the most controversial films in the studio’s history. It is one of the first DC films outside the umbrella of a cinematic universe. While it wasn’t initially received overly positively, it has since received a cult following. Many fans have decided that the film holds up after two decades, despite some contradictions with the original source material. Overall, Constantine has become one of the most successful DC films that aren’t attributed to a caped powerhouse, so it makes sense that a sequel is being considered.
Since it has been nearly two decades since the original film was released, it’s unlikely that this will be a direct sequel, if it ever is created. At best, fans can expect a soft reboot where Constantine likely becomes more aligned with the overall DC Universe. The plot could end up being similar to Deadpool and Wolverine if not for anything other than the concept of many universes being destroyed and slowly merging into one.
In the end, Keanu Reeves and James Gunn have been in talks about Constantine 2. The reboot is a great idea, but it would likely be confusing to many new fans. For this reason, the new title might feature several changes to bring Constantine more in line with James Gunn’s cinematic universe. That said, will the sequel end up ruining the legacy set out by the original, or will it adapt the ideas from the first film while remaining closer to the source material? Only time will tell to see if a Constantine sequel will actually come into fruition or if James Gunn’s talks with Reeves will remain solely ideas.
