Hollywood legends Jane Fonda, 87, and Sally Field, 79, have maintained a strong bond since the 1980s and reunited on screen in the movie 80 For Brady.
Yet, despite their enduring connection spanning multiple decades, Jane reveals she often carries more weight in keeping their friendship alive — though she harbors no resentment about it.
Both women launched their careers in the 1960s, though through vastly different avenues. Jane landed her breakthrough performance in the western picture Cat Ballou while Sally, who recently opened up about an abortion, captured audiences as a teenage sensation on the television series Gidget.
After both performers had established themselves in Hollywood, they formed a bond that has endured through the years.
Nevertheless, during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Jane acknowledged their relationship requires more work than appearances might suggest, reports the Express.
Sally disclosed that this has been the nature of their friendship since their initial meeting. She reminisced during a red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight: “(Jane) literally knocked on my door and said, you know, ‘Come on, we’re going to lunch.'”
Sally further noted that ever since then, the Grace and Frankie star has been “so important” to her not only as a friend but also “as a mentor and all sorts of things.”
The duo became an internet sensation earlier this month following a humorous interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
Jane and Sally were joined by their other 80 For Brady co-stars, Lily Tomlin, 86, and Rita Moreno, 93.
Jane clarified, as she did on the podcast, that she had to deliberately seek a friendship with the “reclusive actress.”
To which Sally promptly replied: “Oh goodness sakes, I couldn’t make you stop.”
This sent her co-stars into a fit of laughter.
In the same conversation, Jane harshly criticized most male friendships, stating that men simply “watch sports or cars or women” together to form friendships.
She went on to say: “Women sit facing each other eye to eye and say, ‘I’m in trouble, I need you. Can you help me?'”
“We’re not afraid of being vulnerable.”
